Marriage Counseling Services and

Couples Counseling Services Costa Mesa

Anyone who has been in a relationship knows when it’s good, it can be your greatest source of joy, comfort and well-being.  And, when it’s bad, a relationship can be your greatest source of tension, self doubt and conflict.  Arguing and bickering are exhausting.  Avoiding problems fuels the distance between you.  The hard-working, fast-paced Orange County lifestyle takes its toll on many couples.

While couples or marriage counseling is not easy, it can help improve communication, strengthen your relationship and help you enjoy each other again.

Here are answers to some common questions about couples counseling in my Costa Mesa office:

My partner/spouse does not “believe” in couples counseling.  Can I still make changes in my relationship?

Partners are not available to come into couple’s therapy for many reasons.  Many clients have found they can make a positive impact on their relationship by working on their own thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

Do we have to be married to work with a marriage counselor?

No, many of the couples I have worked with are not married.  Some do not live together.  Some are not in exclusive relationships.  The common thread is that these couples have decided use couples counseling to improve their relationships.

We tried marriage counseling once before.  My partner felt picked on and refused to come back.  How can this time be different?

As many great marriage therapists as there are in Orange County, this is a common complaint.  In my approach to couples counseling, I treat the relationship as the client and help both partners define shared goals.  This makes it easier for each partner to accept responsibility for their own behaviors that are getting in the way of meeting these goals.

How does couples therapy work with my insurance?

In order to use your insurance for marriage counseling, someone who is covered by the insurance policy has to have symptoms related to the relationship.  For insurance purposes, this person becomes the ‘client’ and the therapy targets these symptoms.  For this reason, some couples choose to pay out-of-pocket for their counseling.  Some larger employers in the Costa Mesa area provide an additional employee benefit called an Employee Assistance Program.  Typically, couples counseling is covered by this benefit.
