Family Counseling in Orange County

Having problems at home with your kids is one of the most defeating feelings you can experience.  It’s hard to accept that all the love, opportunities and good intentions you give if you have not created a home where adults are calm and children behave responsibly.

Family therapy can help provide relief for everyone.  In my family counseling practice, I have a special focus on parents of teens and of ‘boomerang’ kids (adult children who return to live at home).  Each of these life stages brings new tasks for the younger to master and new parenting challenges for the elders to meet.  Because of the fast-paced lifestyle in Orange County, you will likely be called on to deal with issues in your maturing children that you never had to face yourself.  Family counseling can help to clarify new roles and limits that support the younger person’s development and enhance parental sanity.

Here are answers to some common questions about family therapy in my Costa Mesa office:

I’m interested in family therapy to improve our home life.  Who should come?

While I tailor treatment to each unique family counseling situation, I often encourage everyone who lives in the household to attend the first meetings.

How does family counseling work with my insurance?

In order to use your insurance for family therapy, someone who is covered by the insurance policy has to have symptoms related to family dynamics.  For insurance purposes, this person becomes the ‘client’ and the family counseling targets these symptoms.  For this reason, some families choose to pay out-of-pocket for their counseling.  Some larger employers in the Costa Mesa area provide an additional employee benefit called an Employee Assistance Program.  Typically, family counseling is covered by this benefit.

Do you provide family therapy for families with young children?

While I work with many of my clients who are parents on good-parenting techniques in their own counseling, I do not work directly with young children.  Feel free to contact me for referrals; I know some great therapists in Orange County who work with young children, easily accessible from the Costa Mesa area.
